You will be using images from magazines and advertisements to create an awareness image for your issue. Before we do that, let's explore what all this means.

Task #1- Real World Examples:

We are going to view a few videos and artworks about people who are speaking out for problems they see in the world.

First is Anita Sharkeesian from Feminist Frequency.

Next, explore this write up on Naturalist, Andy Goldsworthy

Here is Adbusters "spoof ads" against McDonalds

Task # 2- Vocabulary

There are a few terms that you should be familiar with in order to complete this assignment. Let's review those now.

appropriation- taking an image and using it to create a new work of art

juxtaposition- the act of placing two images that clash next to each other (usually two very different ideas)

recontextualization- taking an image or text and placing them in a new context to give it a new meaning

culture jamming- is usually used in anti-consumerism movements to expose how big scale companies work and how we should not buy into what big companies are telling us

*Once you have finished with this page, move onto the Process page to get started with the project!

Let's get started!

The best way to learn about appropriation is through examples. A very classic artist that used appropriation was Andy Warhol. He took a class logo, Campbells Soup, and recycled it. The image or logo was not originally his idea, but he used to create paintings and prints

Another good example of appropriation is Pablo Picasso. In his piece Composition with Fruit, Guitar and Glass he uses all recycled images to create one work of art. He used a few pictures of a pear and then also put in fabric and news clippings. This is a good example of appropriation because it uses all reused images.

Again, the best way to look at this term is through examples. This image to the right is a good example of juxtaposition because the ads are advocating for opposite ideas. The image on top is for healthy living and the image on the bottom is for indulging in fast food. These billboards are ironically placed because both are in support of clashing ideas.

The image to the left is an example of juxtaposition because it has two contrasting images. Mikey represents a playful and carefree style of life. The soldier on the other had represents war, quite the opposite of a playful and blissful life. Placing the images next to each other makes a statement about the two contrasting concepts.

Marcel Duchamp exhibits recontextualization in his work Fountain. Here Duchamp took a men's urinal, turned it upside down, signed it "R. Mutt", placed it in a gallery, then called it art. this was progressive because all he did was remove an object from its original use and recreated a meaning for it by placing it upside down in a gallery.

This image is culture-jamming because it takes a common logo, FedEx, and renames it FedUp with Excess. This is done to make a statement about people not liking how much extra "stuff" we have. They take a popular image and change its meaning by jamming in with other words or images.
